Exchange Trip to St Aubin Sur Mer for the 80th D-Day Anniversary
On 4th June 21 of us set sail on the ferry from Portsmouth to Caen ( Ouistreham) where we were met by our French hosts. The following day was spent “en famille” before an evening reception. Thursday arrived and the sun shone as we made our way to the memorial on the promenade to take part in a commemorative event and wreath laying ceremony. An event attended not only by the British veterans and others but also by Canadians and Germans. It was very moving, and we felt privileged to take part. This was followed by a lovely lunch and an evening spent with our hosts.

On Friday we were taken to the British Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer, a truly amazing sight especially with the installation Standing with Giants. Over a thousand silhouettes representing fallen service men who lost their lives during the Normandy landings. The memorial as a whole is a fitting tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacfrice. As is usual on our visits the evening was when we were treated to a meal in the local village hall and what a splendid meal it was. On Saturday it was time to bid farewell to our French friends until we host them in Emsworth in 2025.
